Getting "Emo" About "Emo"
Yo,
This was a big topic. Didn't know what a can of worms I opened. Hmm.
Well,first things first, let's Wiki it.
See, nothing is ever as simple as it seems. Say what, Get Up Kids? Not exactly kill yourself music. And I don't feel like I can not say something after those comments about cutting.
It makes me glad that I'll never endure middle school or high school. I know that "Saving the World" sometimes isn't the greatest gig. Especially after the last week. There was an attack. More on that later.
But, it's amazing that one word or stereotype can carry such weight. And imply such serious and sad things about the person it is used to describe.
We're bird kids. We're individuals. And sometimes, we're loners. And I'm not defending myself, or more importantly accusing anyone of calling me names.
It was just a question and I answered it.
I'm Fang, dude with wings. And maybe I'm a loner Dottie, I'm a Rebel, but while I'm at it I'm pretty freaking ill too.
We're all people. Different. Complex. Nuanced. It's great.

Wow, that really did turn into quite the debate. I remember only a few years ago "emo" meant something very different. At any rate, I do hope people can stop trying to label everyone into stereotypes. There are so many more important things in life.

Wow. "Emo" means different things to different people. It's sorta stupid how people call you something and they think it means one thing, but you think it means something else.... Life's weird that way.

I like this post, it kind of helps my point that "emo" shouldn't be an insult (it is at my school; gay is also an insult there, so there you have it: a basic summary of that school).

But yeah, I do wish the world would stop with the whole "You're this, and that's what you are forever" thing. No one likes to be stereotypically labled!
Also, emo means a lot of stuff. Some people get it confused with Goth, some people say it's a depressed person, some say its a depressed person who cuts their wrists. I'm confused by the whole thing!

BUT there is something to be said about Emo. Most of the people who I know who call themselves/are called Emo tend to do...bad things to themselves. And since that's what most of them do, it seems, that's the idea that's been spread...
I know it used to be the term for the genre of music, but now it's more of a fashion/lifestyle. And usually...not so good things happen when a person is "emo".
But Fang...Flock..You guys are awesome. Just tell yourself that; "I am awesome, cuz I'm INSERT FLOCK MEMBER!"

Just because you wear dark colors doesn't mean your emo. I have a urban type style and don't i don't let it define me. I listen to everything from rap to alternative rock. Also alot of bands that are critcized as being emo dispose the claim. I make friends no matter what you look like, where you shop, but only if you have a personality woth knowing.

Good point, but that post really started leaning towards the category of inspirational speech. Nothing wrong with that though. No matter what, "emo" is a confusing term. I've heard so many definitions of it, to the point where people say emo and goth are the same. In the end no stereotype is universally defined for humans, let alone mutants. Anyways, "emo" or not you are the very definition of awesome...although that emo haircut might make you uber-awesome.

Hey Fang, I'm so glad you spoke your mind about how people have been labeling you, not to mention the rest of the world.
Luckily, I've managed to escape most of the labels people often slap on a lot of kids at my school. I used to happily go by "nerd" (ha!) but I realized that it wasn't me, and now I just go by "me." It's nice.

I hate it when people label other people because they're different. I'm different and I have a bunch of friends who aren't afraid of being different. You are your own person and no one can change that.

Fang, i really liked your approach to that subject. At my school people are blurting out that any random person is EMO. Well, honestly i believe that half of those people don't even know what EMO means. It is true there are so many people in this world. Stereotypes like saying that someone is EMO is just a limitation to who they really are. You don't know anyone yntill you know them. I am supreamly happy that you stood up for that. You're right, people get labled too much because of how they look or act. I'm personally not very much of a people person, but that doesn't make me...I don't know...goth or anything. Just because you have one of many qualities that are supposedly related to some type of...whatever, doesn't make you a certain type of person. dude, to me, emo is just another word for people who have the vocabulary of a fly and who can come up for no better word to describe someone who's different then them. Kinda like the word "midget". I used to say that alot. (cuz hello! im 5'9" and only 13!!!!, its pretty hard to find someone even near your hight!)so that was wut i would call people when they were gettin on my nerves. but then i read "Freak the Mighty" (its by Rodman Philbrick, its really thin, but its an awesome book, i definatly recomend it), and this guy (his name is Kevin, but they call him Freak,u have to read the book to find out why) well, he's like super smart and everything, and at the end of a book it had his version of the dictionary(its not very big), and for "midget" the definition is "a word used by people with small minds."
but anyway, back to the subject. Emo's just a word thats said when ppl cant find anything worse to call you (and if thats the worse they could call you, then i congradulate you. because i've been called a lot worse then that, and im probably one of the nicest girls at my school).
i've learned that there are two types of people:
type A) the people who are complete and total snobs and who think anyone different from them just has to be emo or a nerd or a freak or a geek or a goth or something horrible like that.
and then theres:
type B)the people who are just being themselves and are being called all those things, even though its probably not true (and if it is true the Type A people have no right to call them those things in that hurtful of a way).
but anyway, back to the subject [again].
fang, ur not emo. dont let anyone tell you you're emo, cuz its not true. and if u turn the world's version of emo, i'll still support you.

Fang's my favorite character of the whole flock (check the banner on my myspace for that).
Now all this 'emo' business needs to just be left alone, right? Let's settle it like this:
Fang is not 'emo', if anything, Fang's anti-emo! No, I have emo friends, ones that cut themselves, or try to kill themselves and they hate, they want everyone just to die cause they aren't happy.
How is Fang like that? He wears black, he is silent a lot of the time, he has a dark appearance, this more of a true Goth to me. Goth's aren't 'emo' either, they just perfer black and are very observant people that don't get all worked up easily. I know, because that's me.
If Fang were 'emo' he'd try to kill himself, he'd hate his brothers and sisters, he'd wear make-up (yuck), he'd get worked up and mad all the time.
No, Fang is definitely not anything considered emo.
Now, can we just stop with this 'emo' business and call it good? Fang's not emo, nor is any one of the flock. Done, and over with.

Stereotypes are so over used, over discussed, and over analyzed and I don't know a single person on this earth that enjoys them. So why are they still around? Because it's the easiest way to mark some one with out getting to know them. Let's face it, were not going to get to personally know every single person we met or see on the street, so stereotyping is just what come naturally.

I can't say if someone has posted something like this or not. I didn't take the time to read every single post. But this topic I have a lot to say about. I was considered emo at one point in my life, and let me tell you: it did NOT end well. One thing led to another and, truth be told, I did almost begin cutting myself. Thankful I got help, and I got over everything. I admit I did dress in black a lot and wore rubber bands and listened to rock music. But I had a lot of stuff going on in my life at that time too, and everything else just went downhill from there. Steriotyping is a horrible thing. If people wanted labels they'd go buy soupcans.

THANK YOU FOR REITERATING THAT EMO IS A STYLE OF MUSIC! I hate being called emo, just cuz I look like a Fax combo (I got Max's skin w/ freckles and Fang's hair natually). So what if I wear black a lot?! Who cares?! You go, Fang! Jeesh, everyone was made to be different. No matter how hard you try, you will always be your own person, you can never copy anyone else, and no one else can ever copy you. We are all unique individuals, and nobody can change that. I've never believed in labels, never will. There's no reason to. Every single person is different. No matter what anyone thinks. Labels are just something that can bring someone down, something that can ruin a person. Emo just happens to be one of the more damaging ones. How can there be labels if everyone is different? I mean, come on, if I did believe in labels, it would be because everyone had their own, different, unique, meaningful label. There wouldn't be groups, cliques. Nothing like that.
You know, I could go on for hours and hours on this, creating the world's longest blog comment, but, quite frankly, I don't feel like typing that much. I really don't want to get carpal tunnel...You get the gist, right?
Not that I mind much being profound and emotional...But, I'm just not feelin' it right now.
Indeed, you are quite lucky, and should be glad, that you will never have to endure middle school or high school. Too much talk about who's more popular, whose boyfriend is whose, too much drama, fights over something as small as accidentally tripping someone, or just for being different than everyone thinks you should be...
You've been blessed, flock, you've been blessed. And don't forget that. But, you are leading quite an emotional, dramatic, hard life right now...being in Junior High or Senior High wouldn't help much...at all...If such emotional pain can be caused from such small things as gossip or break-ups, imagine how much pain would be caused from...well, you get the point.

Thank U!! Finaly someone has pointed out that emos,punks, and loners R freaking human just like everyone else!! I was like emo for like a day and I got comments about how I was a freak and that I didnt belong! Worst of all this girl at lunch went through my stuff and I was like "what the hell are you doing?" she said "just making sure you didnt have any blades". I just wanted to make a point that emos are people, and I learned that peopl are such freakin hippacrits! So I'm just Mylette and for once in my life I'm proud of it! I have my own flock {friends} who care about me and I have a guy friend that I want to persue, so people can say what they want!! {also I'm not emo}

I don't want to sound cliche, but blame our society.
Okay,firstly, I don't look down on individual people who call themselves "Emo" because a lot of the time they are really nice and become some of my best friends. But I do look down on the steryotype "Emo" because the steryotype has to cut themselves to deal with their problems. Steryotype "Goths" are much better at that sort of thing. (As I understand it. I'm classifyed as a "Nerd" so I guess I don't know that much.) But steryotypes are steryotypes, no matter which way you look at them. They can help in describing a person, but they don't help you see the full picture. They help you see a piece of the picture, and some people take it upon themselves to simply imagine what the rest of the picture looks like instead of finding out for themselves.
I guess basically what I'm saying is try your very hardest not only to dismiss steryotype of other people, but to resist letting others steryotype you. Because once one sticks it's hard to get rid of it, and I would much rather have people work to see the real picture, instead of drawing their own, because the world is full of really terrible artists.

I totally agree, no sterotypes people. It's so stupid cause anyone at my school who wears black(like myself) is asked if they're emo. And anyone who is quite (like myself) same question. But keep in mind Fang so u dont get all offended that these girls here going on and on "Fang ur my cool emo boy!" is diff. from the cutting or whatever. Recently the term emo boy had come to mean a cute, quite, sensitive guy with a certain haircut (one like yours) who ussually dresses in black. I like emo. I pretty much am emo.

I think people thought of you as emo... Cuz you're kinda dark and mysterious... And your hair sounded a tad emo in the beginning if I remember right. And you're always wearing black.

I know what you're talking about. A few people at my Catholic school are emo, one of them being my ex-"friend". I know what emo is from first hand experience, and you are definatly not emo.
